Dark forest

The Dark Forest theory, suggested in the Three Body Problem book series by Liu Cixin, is that any intelligent life in the universe will not communicate because it is unsafe to do so. Basically, a stalemate where all life is paranoid and assumes any other intelligent life would want to kill any competition, and also would stay quiet so as not to be seen as a threat.
