Many people will instinctively adapt and offer what an authoritarian system wants without being asked and without reflecting. This teaches power what it can get away with. Actively work to recognize what values or principles you might feel pressure to give up, the repercussions of that, and avoid doing so.
This chapter uses the Milgram experiment as one of its primary examples, which has been debated about heavily as to whether it accurately recreated conditions similar to those during the Holocaust.
