Learn from peers in other countries
On Tyranny, chapter 16
Have your passport. Not necessarily to leave the country when things get bad, though that is an option, but to travel to other places and learn their histories.
Make and maintain friendships with people from other parts of the world.
Much of what is happening in the west already happened in the east, and people there are often the first to notice and say so. If more Americans were familiar with their stories we might have a better chance of predicting what's to come, and learning from where they succeeded or failed.
