Part of being a citizen and responsible mender of society is to stay in touch with your physical surroundings, break down social barriers, and form an understanding of who to trust or not. This is always important, but becomes critical in a culture of denunciation.

Recollections of fascist movements in the 20th century by its victims almost always include memories of how their neighbors treated them. Normal social gestures take on great significance. People who went out of their way to avoid contact stoked fear.
