Remember professional ethics

On Tyranny, chapter 5

Authoritarians need obedient civil servants like lawyers and judges to carry out their plans. Physicians participated in terrible medical experiments in concentration camps during WWII. Civil servants must uphold their professional promises, ethics and oaths and not cave in to the pressure to comply.

Concentration camp directors seek businessmen interested in cheap labor.

If professionals think of themselves as part of a group with common interests, they can form best practices and business ethics that are enforced by the group as a form of collective action or power.

No execution without trial. No surgery without consent. Prohibit slavery. No paperwork that enables murder or injustice.
