Stand out

On Tyranny, chapter 8

Winston Churchill's decision for Britain to remain in the war in 1940 seems normal and obviously right. At the time it was not seen that way, and was not expected by Hitler. This ended up being the seed of a turning point in World War II, which may have ended much more poorly if he had taken the easy position of withdrawing. He chose to stand out in the name of what was right.

Similarly, Teresa Prekerowa chose to maintain her friendship with Jewish people in Poland when it was not a popular choice. Most others were distancing themselves from any Jews they knew. Teresa was able to save several people from the Warsaw ghetto who would have otherwise died in concentration camps.

Rosa Parks stood out by saying no to a racist policy and became a central figure in the civil rights movement.
