the Last Man

The concept of a person who is driven entirely by comfort and safety, takes no risks and is tired of life. The last man is incapable of creating a personal ethos and acting on it. He is a passive nihilist.

The concept was introduced by Nietzsche in Thus Spoke Zarathustra as the antithesis of the übermensch. His opinion was that Western civilization had chosen the Last Man as its ultimate goal.
